How to Avoid Delays from IRS Identity Checks

Chad Dickinson • March 27, 2025
Identity theft continues to be a major concern during tax season, and the IRS has taken steps to protect taxpayers through increased identity verification procedures. While these efforts help reduce fraud, they can also delay your refund if your return gets flagged.

In this post, we’ll explain what triggers these IRS identity checks, how to respond if it happens to you, and the simple steps you can take now to avoid delays altogether.

Watch the below video for a quick explanation:

Why the IRS Flags Tax Returns for Identity Verification

The IRS may select your tax return for identity verification for several reasons:

  • Your return has suspicious activity or inconsistencies
  • It includes new or unusual income or filing details
  • You’re filing from a new address or using a new bank account
  • The return was selected randomly as part of their fraud prevention system

If flagged, you’ll receive IRS Notice 5071C in the mail. This letter provides instructions on how to confirm your identity either online or by calling the IRS directly.

What Happens If You Receive IRS Notice 5071C?

Getting flagged doesn't mean you're in trouble — it just means the IRS needs to verify it's really you. Here’s what to do:

  1. Follow the instructions on the notice carefully.
You can verify your identity online or by calling the IRS at 1-800-830-5084.
  2. Have your tax return info handy.
You’ll be asked to confirm details from your return to complete the verification.
  3. Wait for processing.
Once verified, it may take up to 9 weeks for the IRS to finish processing your return.

How to Avoid IRS Identity Checks in the Future

The best way to prevent delays is by signing up for an IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN). This is a six-digit code that only you and the IRS know. You enter it when e-filing, which helps confirm your identity instantly.

Final Thoughts

IRS identity verification checks are there to protect you — but they can slow down your refund if you’re not prepared. By understanding the process and taking a few proactive steps, like getting an IP PIN, you can avoid unnecessary delays and file your return with peace of mind.
